Month of June is already here. With its onset and the results of board exams declared, there is a lot of buzz going around about admissions in colleges and the cut offs.

After joining a college you are ready for shopping, getting new bag packs, looking for latest gadgets to flaunt around but what everyone forgets is to engage in activities which improve your personality.

Like there were extra-curricular activities in school, which I’m sure have worked wonders in enhancing your personality, in colleges; there are various societies both cultural and non-cultural which open up a whole new world of exposure in front of you. Joining a society can be a great way to integrate yourself into new surroundings and make friends along the way.

This article aims to help you understand the 5 most essential clubs/ societies which you should join in college.  It also lists some well established, popular clubs and societies of DU colleges.

  1. DANCE SOCIETIES

Dancing is something that fascinates everyone. The beats of music can make you move and sway and get you down on the dance floor even if you absolutely have no idea of how to dance. If you are very passionate about Dancing and making a career in it, joining this society will help you have an upper edge over others. This is one cultural society that almost every Delhi University college has-whether we talk about 'Sparx' of Gargi College, 'Mudra' of Jesus and Mary College, 'Oorja' of Hansraj college, 'Sensation' of Kirori Mal College or 'Misba' of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce. The dance societies are often classified into those for folk dances and those for western styles. Each college society is remarkable in their own way for their dance forms. Go, join the Dance society of your college and make your college life a memorable one.

2. MUSIC SOCIETIES

Most people find music the only way to relieve stress and get rid of mental disturbances. Music is something which escapes nobody’s humming. Those very passionate about music and various forms of it should join this society to learn and improve their skills.

'Swaranjali' of Hansraj College is a very famous society with its band named 'Hansarj Projekt'. Lady Shri Ram College's 'LSR WMS's' is a western choir which showcases a fusion of jazz and R&B. 'Geetanjali' from Miranda house and ‘Samaranjini’ from Gargi College are yet other famous music societies of Delhi University.

3. DRAMATICS

Who gives up on a chance to act, when there is an opportunity laid in front? It makes you bold, expressive and confident. It is great to watch such real and amazing talents in fests. With Bollywood buzz all around, nobody abstains from getting into a field which inculcates acting skills in them. So, if you too have a passion of theatre, join this society.

'Verve' of Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies, 'The Players' of Kirori Mal College, 'Ibtida' of Hindu College, 'Sangharsh' of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College (evening), and 'Shunya' of Ramjas College are some of the top dramatics societies of Delhi University.

4. LITERATURE SOCIETY

Students have always been seen as having a great interest in language, literature, debating and putting up their voices or opinions. Such students can have a gala time joining the creative writing societies and the debating societies of their colleges. These societies help them in nurturing their talents.

'Bazm-e-adab' is the Urdu society of St. Stephens College which organizes events and finely explores Urdu literature. 'Wordcraft' of Ramjas College, 'Quilluminati' of Gargi College, and 'Grubstreet' of Kirori Mal College are some of the top literature societies among Delhi University colleges.

5. PHOTOGRAPHY SOCIETY

 

Many students are aspiring for a career in photography nowadays. Photography is not an easy talent but if you have got the artistic eye required to finding good frames, then you are most welcome in this versatile society where owning a DSLR does not issue you a license to be a photographer.

Photographers are required everywhere- to cover events such as fests, functions, weddings, and of course in the media and for the digital presence of almost every company in this digital age. 'Pixels' of Hansraj College, 'Snapshots' of Miranda House, 'Vivre' of Hindu College and ‘Iris’ of Gargi College are some of the best photography societies of Delhi University.

College fests are great opportunity to witness the talented societies of various colleges competing against each other and where you get a chance to explore and experience the audience - something you might never get a chance to face later.

 You all know you are destined to become a banker or a doctor or an entrepreneur with little or no time to explore your talents in future. College life is the only place where you get to showcase your skills in front of others and know where you stand in comparison.

GO GRAB IT. BE A PART OF ANY SOCIETY WHETHER CULTURAL OR NON- CULTURAL BECAUSE YOU ALL ARE THE ONES WHO RUN THEM.
